Looking at buying a set of leg armor

I found a quality set of leg armor, but it is 18 gauge. I only will be wearing it as a costume to Renaissance Fairs really, and seeing as I am a minor I won't be doing dueling in this armor probably. I got a 16 gauge and 20 gauge helmets, both of which feel nice and sturdy. Will 18 gauge be alright?
