Like the title says, lived my childhood with my entire house flooring with the 2ft x 3ft carpet samples stapled to the floor. Every color you could imagine, every pile height you could think of and in no particular pattern or order. We would get them free from the local flooring store.
I asked my parents why we had them and it was because it was cheap and because we had a bunch of animals. If one of the animals makes a mess or got sick, just rip up the square and grab a new one from the stack in the garage and staple it down.
Every couple years we would go through and replace all of them. Eventually we had to start paying for them, but it was still cheaper than any other flooring at the time.
