Moore’s law is dying. We need to future-proof storage.
Post Body

Quick refresh on Moore’s Law

In 1965, an American scientist named Gordon Moore theorized that the number of

components in a microchip would double every year (changed to every two years in 1975).

He has been right.

But as transistors approach atomic scales, the physical limits of silicon-based technologies are approaching.

From Gordon Moore in 2015:

“I guess I see Moore’s Law dying here in the next decade or so, but that’s not surprising."

Apple’s M1 Max microprocessor (or microchip) today, contains over 57 billion transistors placed just 5 nanometres apart.

That is smaller than a wavelength of light and invisible to the human eye using a microscope.

More from Moore:

“The fact that materials are made of atoms is the fundamental limitation and it's not that far away. We're pushing up against some fairly fundamental limits so one of these days we're going to have to stop making things

smaller.”

In the next decade, just as Moore’s law begins to expire, we will face an unprecedented surge in data generation.

We need to future-proof data storage.

Some key components of future-proof storage systems. 👇

- Versatility

As Moore's Law approaches its limits, the trajectory of technological advancements becomes less predictable.

Storage solutions must be versatile to accommodate unforeseen shifts.

- Decentralized scalability

Storage systems will need to be able to scale organically. As more nodes join the network, storage capacity increases, allowing the system to scale with demand.

- AI-optimized

Implementing AI can optimize data retrieval speeds, predict storage failures, and enhance security measures.

- Sustainability

As energy costs rise and environmental concerns grow, future storage solutions will prioritize energy-efficient operations. Decentralized systems, leveraging existing resources, can often operate more efficiently than massive centralized data centers.

- Material Innovations

Research into alternative, sustainable materials for storage devices can reduce the environmental impact and reliance on scarce resources

- User-Centric Design

As businesses transition to new storage solutions, ease of data migration will be crucial. Future-proof systems will prioritize seamless transitions.

- Quantum-Resistant Cryptography

As quantum computing becomes a reality, it poses a threat to current encryption methods. Future-proof storage will incorporate encryption that's resistant to quantum attacks.
