Possible change from Urban Planning to Architecture thoughts

Post Body

Background: I graduated with an undergrad in Environmental Design that was under my school’s Architecture department. I was actually originally an Architecture major in my first semester but left the program after only a week in. I deeply regret that decision and not trying architecture for at least one semester. If I could go back in time I would have stayed and graduated with a B.S in Architecture.

I graduated with that B.A in 2021 but quickly realized it was pretty much worthless after struggling to find any jobs with it. Eventually I settled on going to graduate school for urban planning as the next logical step. I am more than halfway into the program with expected graduation in May 2024.

My dilemma now is that I am having second thoughts about pursuing a Master of Urban Planning and if its really going to be useful and applicable to me finding jobs and if it’s something I actually want to do. I always had a passion for architecture but I felt it was overwhelming and a lot of work for not much pay. At the same time urban planning is a small field with not as many jobs as architecture. I also see many job postings that require technical skills associated with architecture like AutoCAD and Revit. Architecture just seems much bigger and more future proof.

Now I am realizing I should have just done a Master of Architecture after undergrad but I am already so deep in urban planning. I don’t know if I want to go to school for an extra 3-4 years and if I do if it will be worth it in the end. Any advice or thoughts would be appreciated.
