Newb here, does it always hurt so much?

So I shot a compound bow for the first time yesterday and it didn’t go so well. First shot left my forearm swollen and in pain. I was under the impression that I shouldn’t need an arm guard for a compound bow so I obviously did something wrong. Any tips on how to prevent this from happening again or should I be wearing ppe until I learn to hold the bow correctly
