Any difference in stars or hero assist with LC?

Just wondering if there's any actual differences in the star level of heroes. Like here I have a 5 star meow vs a 0 star Taiga but Taiga's meteors have been getting me through every level fine. Also do hero assists have any impact? I've been switching to use Meow on the main screen just for the 5% damage hero assist I get from my Helix, but no idea if it ACTUALLY does anything.
