How to keep ramshorn population balanced?

Post Body

I got ramshorn snails a while ago and now they are overrunning my aquarium and eating my plants. I don't want to get rid of them entirely, I just want to keep the population low enough to stop them from killing the plants. A lot of recommended snail predators sound more like snail eradicators in an aquarium setting. I don't want to kill them manually because I don't think it's ethical; I want a natural solution. So I'm looking for predators that will eat some of the snails but not all, or will eat only small snails and/or eggs but not big ones etc. Any suggestions?

Tankmates are napo cories, guppies and neon tetras. I currently have a 60 L tank but will soon upgrade to 100 L. My canister filter can handle up to 250 L.

Options I've considered so far:

  • Loaches seem like they would eradicate the snails.

  • A Dario Dario will only eat small snails, but when they run out of food I'll have to feed them other live or frozen food, which I'm willing to do but it's not ideal. I'd prefer something that also eats dry food.

  • Assassin snails will themselves reproduce until they've eradicated the ramshorns.

  • Some shrimp eat snail eggs and baby snails but they might themselves reproduce too much (I'm not sure though, this so far seems like the most viable option, but it's hard to get information on which shrimp species is ideal).
