South American Puffer
Post Body

Hey guys,

I just broke down my 10 gal and installed everything into a new (to me) 25 gal. It's a super tall tank: 24 in wide, 20 in tall and 13 in deep. I want to completely redo my hardscape and stock and go for a cool amazon basin biotope. I'd really like to get a south american puffer (aka bee puffer, aka amazon puffer) as I hear they are fairly tolerant as puffers go and extremely entertaining. I know I need to wait a while for my new tank to become re-established since they are fairly sensitive.

My concerns are thus:

1) having enough snails to feel the puffer. About how many do they eat every day? I'm okay with setting up like a tupperware box or something to grow a culture but I don't want anything too elaborate.

2) The ever-growing beak - I read that SAP's have a very fast growing beak that sometimes needs to be trimmed. I watched a video and it doesn't seem too bad but I'd like a little advice.

3) My clean up crew - I plan on having a herd of dwarf cories but my algae eater crew is currently nerite snails. Will a puffer decimate nerites or are they big enough to be left alone?

4) Tank dimension - I know I have enough room gallon wise but I read that SAP's prefer long tanks with strong currents. I have a tall tank with a strong current - is that good enough?

My second choice is probably a nice pair of pearl or moonlight gouramis which are undoubtedly lower maintenance but don't really offer the same personality or cool factor as a puffer.
