Kuhli Loach Question

Hi everyone I have a 55g tank with 6 kuhlis in it, I love these little guys, but am wondering how can you tell if any of them die? lately the most I've seen at one time is 4 but these little sneakers hide out all the time. I there any key things I should look, smell or notice if they die?
