i need help..

i have this 40 gal tank, i dont know how to clean it properly and would like to know lol. i have a 5 gal planted at home so im just not sure how to cleab such a big tank.
the water level is low because im doing a water change. but the water is brownish and dirty although it looks better now that i cut off all the dead stems my syphon also stopped working so the sand is a little dirty.
do i just keep up water changes until its clear? or do i need to do something more?
