How does beneficial bacteria survive?

Post Body
Just a weird question I have. A few days ago I posted about whether or not I could turn off my canister filter with a broken impeller over night because I wanted sleep and I had people say that the beneficial bacteria in it would start dying off without moving water.
Which, fair enough, but how does that work in tanks that have no filters or water movement??
