Maytag dryer looks like it’s burning inside

This is the inside of a Maytag dryer, it’s about 4 years old and was purchased from Costco. It has been making a strained rumbling sound for the first 5 seconds when a load is started. I was looking inside and was surprised to see this blackened area. I don’t think it looks right— can anyone advise if this is safe or is this indicative of something very wrong?
