Apple Watch Series 3 GPS version (non LTE): Can it track GPS on its own?

Been having a hard time finding an answer to this. If I get the non LTE edition, can I run this with this on my wrist without having my iPhone on me? As in can I put an app like map my run on it And have it track my position? That would be the appeal of getting it for me so I could leave my phone at home (but can’t justify the higher price of the LTE edition with the monthly fee)
