One year of Apple TV+ for Apple product users

Hi all, this is my first time posting in this sub, so please excuse the formatting.
I just have a a quick question about the Apple TV . I heard that if you have an Apple product, you will get one year of Apple TV . Does this apply to new purchases only, or does it also extend to current owners of Apple products?
I have a MacBook Pro (2013 version I believe; bought in December 2014/January 2015). So would I get the year free of Apple TV ?
