I am thru hiking the AT currently. After enduring many rain storms and even snow recently, I decided to come on here and ask successful thru hikers what the best clothing was for wet and cold conditions.
I have a wicking base layer and have a North Face 3-in-1 coat with me. The 3-in-1 has a fleece base, and a “rainproof” outer shell. I have found that the outer shell is giving me moisture issues. I used it for skiing so I assumed it would be good for hiking, but it is not. I keep ending up WET and COLD.
How did you dress for cold and wet conditions?
Today I am going to buy an umbrella because that seems to be the only slight guarantee that I will maintain dryness in a storm. I just don’t like the idea of having to sacrifice a trekking pole for an umbrella.
