I don't know if it's because of my age, but finding anything to watch in the past four years has become damn near impossible (I've been watching anime for about two decades). I'm pretty much open to anything, as long as it has a sense of direction/plot, doesn't feature medieval adventurer settings and doesn't have corny "smell the roses" tropes.
The last Anime I was able to watch was Chainsaw Man. Well, actually I watched the first episode when it came out, then binge-read the manga because I couldn't wait for the remaining episodes. What a thrilling read! There was a sense of mystery and purposefulness that kept me hooked until the end of the first part. The work as a whole has its own unique style, it's actually funny, and it's surreal without using its weirdness as the main attraction-point. (Typing this reminds me to check out the new chapters.)
Nowadays, it feels like every new show is a rehash of the Isekai, Shonen, Idol or Slice-of-Life formula. Nothing sticks out as "doing its own thing", the way GTO, Cowboy Bebop or Evangelion did -- and they did it without trying to be 'woke', too.
What shows would you guys recommend to people in their thirties?
EDIT: Some people were puzzled by my use of the word 'woke'. I'm referring to shows that strategically target controversial topics in the hope that it will bring publicity or acclaim. I'm not American, so I guess that's not what the word means.
EDIT 2: Holy smoke, so many recommendations! Just wanted to say that I'm reading each and every one of your comments, writing down the titles I don't know. You guys rock!
