Gf wants to watch more animes, it wasn't me trying to get her into it more. Anyways, idk what to show her at this point. We have watched a few of the best shows: Death Note, Vinland Saga, Cowboy Bebop. She loved them, as do I. But now I'm stumped. I know for a fact if I didnt watch animes when I was a kid there's no way I would be into the shows I consider myself a fan of. Monster is just as good as those aforementioned ones imo but a bit slow. Same issue with AoT which she says she wants to watch on her own anyway, as we are long distance for a decent amount of the year/stretches at a time due to work. Btw I am specifically talking about shows, we know Ghibli and some other movies are great, we do want to watch some of those but atm shows are the focus. One of the main things that's great about animes is how short the eps are, which makes them amazing for when you're eating or whatever. The minimum requirement is that it has a great story and characters. We don't want some dumb slice of life or whatever either. Her favorite shows which arent animes btw (if it helps) are True Detective, The Wire, Parks & Rec, Justified, Banshee, and Fleabag, which I havent seen the latter two so idk what those are like. She loves true crime, thrillers, gritty dramas, and dark comedies.
Keep in mind, when I say "normal person", that means I expressly don't want to show her stuff which has the "anime aesthetic" for the most part. If it's full of characters with every color hair on the rainbow, ridiculous body proportions, little girls whose voices sound like theyre being pitched up and their VAs are trying to sound as infantile as they can, etc. Comedy-wise, think Succession.
I'm conflicted with whether to show HxH or not. I absokutely love that show but idk whether it works for a normal person or not who wasnt tainted by the depths of anime yet, it is most certainly weird. Was considering showing her FMAB but I kinda hate it bc its tone and pace are way off and the constant repetitive jokes get super annoying and stupid at a certain point, not even funny. Samurai Champloo I felt the ending was dogshit and the eps were pretty mixed quakity, the soundtrack is what makes it great imo. Anyway, these are just my own opinions which I know I shouldn't expect her to sharez however if I'm gonna rewatch a show, knowing how I view those aspects might make it a bit annoying for me. I have recommended FMAB and Samurai Champoo to her to watch on her own if she wants to anyway.
My candidates to watch together are (which I haven't watched): Banana Fish Pluto Parasyte Mushishi Psycho Pass
I should state, when I say "weird" I don't mean with regards to horror, sci-fi, or Lynchian "weirdness", I mean in thw way that shonens and r/anime favorites are weird af, and I don't think that should need any explanation in this sub tbh
