Climate change is real, it is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species. - Leonardo DiCaprio
We promised we would make 2020 bigger and more powerful than ever and now we’re delivering on those promises. Keep reading to find details of some big actions coming up.
This newsletter is a call to action; it is time to channel your rage, your grief, your love... and join Animal Rebellion in solidarity against the Government and corporations who are letting us all down. They refuse to make the changes we know are necessary in this animal and climate emergency: changes that will save our planet.
Animal Rebellion is building up to the May Rebellion with regular actions, letting everyone know we are here and are a force to be reckoned with. We are asking you to reassemble your affinity groups, establish new ones, or join local communities and ready yourselves for action. Many of you have been meticulously organising actions and events over the quiet winter months and, finally, the time has come to execute those carefully laid plans.
Call to action checklist:
- Find and attend your local non-violent direct action (NVDA) training
- Remember your awesome homemade banners and placards
- Call the local and national press
- Take photos and videos and share them on social media
Publicity is key for your Animal Rebellion actions. We must make our presence known in order to make our voices heard.
We're Dying Over Spilt Milk - Animal Rebellion Arla Action
Having cows produce milk for human consumption is unjust, unsustainable and inefficient. We know this and we know that transition to an alternative is necessary if we want to avoid the complete destruction of the Earth and its inhabitants. But why are we focusing on Arla?
Arla is massive. It is the single biggest dairy company in the UK and its revenue in 2017 alone amounted to approximately 10.4 billion euros. Plus, Arla is not just one dairy. It is owned by over 10,000 dairy farmers around the globe, meaning that, when we are successful in helping Arla transition to a more sustainable alternative, it will have a huge impact on the future of our food system.
We're calling on Arla to stop procrastinating on plant-milk and lead the way towards a just, sustainable plant-based food system.
Join Animal Rebellion on 7th March for our Arla action!
Australia is STILL on Fire
Last month, in solidarity with Australians across the globe, we joined Extinction Rebellion at the Australian High Commission in London to demand action from the Australian Government on the bushfires that are devastating the country.
Since September 2019, at least 33 people and an estimated 1.25 billion animals have died. Over 11 million hectares of land have been burnt, destroying habitats and thousands of homes. Record-breaking temperatures and widespread drought have fueled the fires and they continue to rage.
The Australian Government has finally acknowledged the link between the bushfires and climate change, but it has still not committed to reducing emissions to a level that is anywhere near what is required to keep global warming below 1.5C. Instead, the Government is focusing more on 'improving resilience' and 'adapting' to climate change and has plans to expand the damaging coal industry further. This is not good enough. Now is the time to put the pressure on - contact your local MP or take to the streets to demand more action to help protect Australia and save our planet.
Climate Assembly UK
The first of the Citizens’ Climate Assembly meetings took place over the weekends of 24th-26th January and 7th-9th February. 110 people from across the UK met with experts to discuss a range of issues including, the impact of climate change, where our energy comes from, what we buy, land use, food and farming.
Academics presented evidence and we heard from speakers based at organisations including, Natural England, the New Economic Foundation and Wellcome, as well as David Attenborough. The final weekend of meetings is on 20th-22nd March. At this point the whole assembly will gather to discuss their conclusions and recommendations for how the UK Government can reach its target of net-zero emissions by 2050.
Although this is a positive move, we recognise that a target of net zero emissions by 2050 is just not urgent enough. We need to do all we can to put pressure on the Government to lead the transition to a plant-based food system. You can help by contacting your local Animal Rebellion group and getting involved in actions.
Animal Rebellion Netherlands Ocean Rebellion - 27th March to 5th April
It’s time to tell the truth about the fishing industry and its devastating effects on our planet.
Through multiple events, we will inform the public and pressure the Government, media and businesses to tell the truth and make changes towards a plant-based food system. There will also be a bold and creative high risk action at some point throughout the week, so stay tuned!
This is Animal Rebellion's first major Gift Event and it is being hosted across the world in over 7 locations. There will be tonnes of amazing live artists, DJs, art pieces, block printing, food, photo booths and more (on a pay what you can basis)!
The London edition will be held in Hackney on 29th February - see you there!
