How should I be storing decimal values, 3.99 or 399 ?

I’ve always stored my financial values as a decimal type in MySQL and continued to do so since moving towards angular and nestjs.
Would it be better to store as integer with no pence/cents and just pipe the output?
I’ve struggled with values such as 3.99 being interpreted as strings in json so feel like I’ve probably been doing it wrong all this time 🙈
