For about three years I had at least two tests a year and my ferritin levels were consistently low, between 6-11 on a normal scale which is 15-275. I was advised to take an iron supplement. Then I was advised to double that. Then to add a third pill a day. I also saw a nutritionist, changed my diet to a Mediterranean diet and cut out almost all of my bad habits. At 45 I lead the healthiest life I have ever led.
I received another blood test and my ferritin hit 15. My doctor advised me to stop all iron supplements completely. So I did. She said that iron deficiency is solved when I get back to range and it doesn’t not have to be continuously supplemented
My first blood test since stopping iron and my ferritin is 6 and MCH 26.3 which are both considered low on the Ontario Canada blood work forms.
I have an appointment coming up. The theory of stopping iron seemed ridiculous to me. I took triple the supplements to get it to the bottom number of the range. I have a hard time understanding how stopping them makes sense.
Is anyone able to let me know the theory behind this? I don’t want to accuse my doctor of poor decisions when she is actually on point.
Thanks.
