Api for first app ?

Hi,
I'm trying Android studio for the first time, and I want to create an app that would need access to an online database.
I ran into the concept of api, but it's a little difficult to understand for a beginner as me. Any advice on tools/tuto to use to learn how to create a functionnal api?
