Question about TWRP Recovery

Hi guys, I'm a first timer trying to root my device and I didn't know where else to ask my question about rooting.
So far I have managed to flash TWRP recovery on my Moto G power (2020), but I get a page that asks for a password and an error in the terminal that fails to decrypt my internal storage. I have seen/read articles that suggest I may have to factory reset my device and try again but I was hoping there would be another way.
