New emojis not showing up anymore on Messenger Android 8

I have a Galaxy S7 Edge and up until yesterday the newer emojis not included in my Unicode version displayed properly only in the Facebook Messenger app as this uses a different emoji set. I uninstalled the app and downloaded it again because of a bug and now the messenger emojis have been replaced my my Samsung stock ones and I can no longer see those new emojis. I can't seem to be able to find a setting similar to iOS where you can choose which emojis will be displayed.

Any ideas or am I not seeing those ever again?
