Can you only use your Google Voice number in Hangouts?

I'm getting kinda sick of using Hangouts, but as far as I know no other apps support GVoice numbers, and I don't want to have two separate apps for texting, one for my carrier and one for GVoice.
Is there a way I can forward my GVoice number or something similar?
