PSA: if you cant connect your Android phone to your Windows PC via USB, boot from an Ubuntu USB stick and then try it.
Post Body

There are zillions of posts out there about people not being able to connect to their Android phones via USB to a windows machine. This happened to me, and no matter what I tried I could not get it to work. I made an Ubuntu USB boot stick, and booted to it without installing to my laptop, and Ubuntu had no problems at all communicating with my phone.

I cant find any documentation pointing to a Window7 bug that causes this, but certainly if it works flawlessly on the exact same hardware with a different operating system, I'm going to have to point the finger at Windows.
