Questions about updating CyanogenMod

A few weeks ago I rooted my Droid Razr and flashed CyanogenMod to use. Now I have an update that says the newest version of CM is out and I just have a few questions on that process.
- Will updating CM mess up how my phone currently is?
- Once I download the new version, how exactly is it installed/updated?
- Is there anything in particular I should be careful about during the update process?
Sorry if I'm asking any dumb questions, but thanks in advance for any help.
