HTC G2 - Is it rootable?

Hey, /r/Android.
I've recently purchased a HTC Desire Z / G2, which is a really great phone. However, I've run into controversy about its rootability. Some people say it has some kind of "DRM chip" which prevents custom ROMs from being flashed.
Can someone, please, answer the following questions? (I'll pay in karma, thanks):
- Does it really have a hard-based anti-flash protection?
- Is there any way to get around it?
- Can I install Gingerbread to my G2?
