r/Android what IM and Text Message clients do you all use?

I am looking to get away from Google Talk and maybe the stock text clients on my Android phone. I do not like that the new update wants so many permissions and wants to see so much, all for an IM client.
So, what clients do you guys use/recommend, if any? And can you give me some personal pros and cons for them?
I am running Jelly Bean, if that makes a difference to you guys, on an LG Optimus 9.
