Why do so many apps request location data?

It seems that every new app I download wants to know where I am. According to LBE privacy guard, 74 apps on my phone would like to know my location. Most of these have obvious reasons, like google maps, Ingress or a camera app (geotagging), but some are strange, and a little bit worrying.
AntTek App Manager, Beer Citizen, Dictionary, Firefox, Last.fm, MP3 Ringtone Maker, Plague Inc., Pulse, Skype, Vimeo, Wikipedia, reddit is fun, tTorrent
Every time one of these apps asks for my location I wonder what on Earth for? Why does tTorrent want to know where I am? Why does reddit is fun? I'm just glad I have LBE privacy guard so I can smite these requests, but I worry about people that don't.
