It appears I have been the object of property damage and theft. Wall of text time.
Here are the important facts:
When I got onto this server, there were two activated portals in the vicinity of the spawn, both of which actually lead to the same portal in the nether. I originally thought that they each went to different places in the nether.
One of the two activated portals (Portal B, hereafter) was at least a hundred blocks (300 meters) from my apartment and lead somewhere I wanted to go to frequently, so I built a bridge to it for my own personal convenience. All I wanted to do was trade.
Because I wanted to direct new players towards the same opportunities in trade, I built a billboard above the far-off Portal B, naming the location and with a big arrow. (In fairness to the property destroyers, I was also poking fun at that which they disliked. I was expecting some sort of response, though not what I got.)
The location to which Portal B leads was supposed to be rather inconvenient to get to, so to deter griefing by unknown new players. Those who aggressed against my property wanted the location to be secret, at least for new players.
I built a third portal (Portal C hereafter), which lead me to discover that all three portals in the vicinity of the spawn lead to the same portal in the nether. Its a glitch that I took advantage of frequently to increase my speed of travel.
I labeled my portal (Portal C) with the name of the "secret" location that I frequented. I wanted to help new players get to civilization and benefit as I had benefited. My charitable structures have been seen as a means of danger to a few.
While I was not logged onto the server (I think on Dec. 17th, 2011), a number of individuals destroyed my Portal C, as well as Portal B, which I never owned. (oh, the irony: griefing has been used as an anti-griefing measure)
Now, there is only one portal near the spawn, AFAIK.
Those who destroyed my portal and stole my obsidian did so because they saw griefing by new players as a threat to the above "secret" location. Such a "threat" is best called an existential threat. They sought to defend themselves against a threat, and chose a form of violence as the means. Let's read some Rothbard on violent defense in relation to threats:
Violent defense then must be confined to violent invasion – either actually, implicitly, or by direct and overt threat. But given this principle, how far does the right of violent defense go? For one thing, it would clearly be grotesque and criminally invasive to shoot a man across the street because his angry look seemed to you to portend an invasion. The danger must be immediate and overt, we might say, "clear and present" – a criterion that properly applies not to restrictions on freedom of speech (never permissible, if we regard such freedom as a subset of the rights of person and property) but to the right to take coercive action against a supposedly imminent invader.
Griefing from future, new players is not an overt, direct, implicit, actual, nor "clear and present" threat and/or danger. People who are not present can make no threats nor invade person or property.
TL;DR I demand 20 obsidian and 5 iron ingots from the individuals who destroyed my nether portal and stole my 10 obsidian. The first 10 obsidian is to replace that which was stolen, the extra 10 obsidian is for damages, and the extra 5 iron ingots is for having to write this long post. I don't care who the vandals are, so, you can leave the above sum in a chest by my apartment near spawn, with some neutral individual as the owner of the chest, and me listed as someone who can access the contents of the chest (i.e. "/cmodify orthzar")
If the property destroyers had just payed me to take down my portal, my bridge, and my billboard, then I would have done so. Instead, they resorted to the methods of the statist.
limbo music starts playing "How low, can you go? How low, can you go?"
