In psychology, authoritarianism can be understood as a dimension of personality, in which an individual is reverent towards tradition, convention, hierarchy, and well authority, and orients their lives around control and coercion. Personality disorders (PDs) are inflexible patterns of behavior and inner experience, usually in domains of cognition, affect, interpersonal functioning, and impulse control, in such a manner that causes distress to the individual and dysfunction in variety of different spheres in a person's life (in an almost context-independent way), in a way that deviates from the expectations and norms of one's culture. In other words, PDs are social constructs.
I guess from my perspective, assuming a kind of anarchist society hasn't moved past pathologization of mental disorders, would authoritarian personalities likely be considered a personality disorder, in part because authoritarian behavior deviates greatly from the norms of an autonomy-centered anarchic culture? Authoritarianism would likely cause distress and dysfunction in an anarchist society, and we already have evidence that it negatively impacts folks cognitively, affectively, interpersonally, and impulsively. If we treated it as a disorder, or at the very least a problem of living if you wanted to interpret it non-pathologically, we could think of preventive strategies and treatments, so as to help these people.
I'm just curious as to what anyone's thoughts on this would be.
I guess this also opens a wider question of how mental illnesses would be viewed in an anarchist society to begin with. How would the field of psychiatry change if it was anarchized? I imagine something like ODD wouldn't be pathologized anymore. What else could be different?
