I was reading Roger Douglas' book Unfinished Business (both Roger and Boris Yelstin are interesting converts to classical liberalism, as neither started out as that), when I realized everyone has a preconceived notion of what a post-socialist Western country looks like and it does not necessarily mean we will go Venezuelan and eat dogs. However, reading about import controls, inflation, unemployment, and needing permission to buy anything from overseas, this seems more realistic than the red scare that many conservatives talk about (not that it is never possible). However, to make matters worse, growth from 1960-1990 were 0.6%, companies needed approval to produce anything, and national champions would prevent companies from being competitive.
As for civil liberties, the UK is a prime example of what happens when civil liberties take a back seat, and I think all the articles on people being arrested for having spade or jokes gone wrong speak for themselves.
Overall I think if the US goes socialist, it will look more like New Zealand with record low growth, high debt, and brain drain.
