Shooting a point & shoot camera without a pressure plate

Hi! I was wondering if anyone has tried to use their 35mm point & shoot camera without the pressure plate? (Located at the camera door) I have a Yashica Auto Focus Motor that only works properly (with a film roll loaded inside) whenever I remove the pressure plate. For some weird reason, whenever the pressure plate is attached to the camera, the film roll gets ripped or stops advancing after 2-3 shots. Is my camera still usable without the pressure plate or do I have to find a donor Yashica Auto Focus Motor body to get a new pressure plate/film door? Any tips/advice would be much appreciated. Thank you!
