Just out of curiosity, has anyone else built an Amtrak points calculator? I'm interested in comparing notes.

By a quick google search, people have calculated Amtrak points to be worth anywhere from 1.85 cents per point to 2 cents per point to 2.9 cents per point.

I have a calculator (see below) that I use to determine whether it's more worth it to use points or dollars where I basically input the listed points vs dollars amounts and turn the points value into a dollar value, then buy whichever is less. The formulas are:

  1. "real cost" of listed point values or [Actual Pt Value] = [Listed Points]*0.95*0.0233, because you get a 5% rebate, and my estimate is points are worth 2.33 cents each
  2. "real cost" of listed dollar values or [Actual $ Value] = [Listed Cost]*(1-3*0.0233), because you get 3 points per dollar spent on an Amtrak World credit card

Obviously YMMV depending on when you look at tickets, and I tend to look early, but so far I've totaled all the logged trips where I've looked up the price and seen it average to 2.33 cents per point, so I used that value above. Am I missing anything? Do any of you have your own calculation running? Curious to hear y'all's thoughts.
