How to do free SEPTA transfer

At the bottom of my ticket it says ' Free SEPTA Transfer to City Center: This ticket is valid for free travel on SEPTA Regional Rail trains between 30th Street, Suburban Station and Jefferson Station.'

When I took a train to Philly last time I tried to use the same QR code at the turnstiles for a SEPTA train and it didn't work. So I had to figure out how to go and pay for one. I would've called Amtrak customer service but I figured I'd ask here since it's technically not Amtrak? I'm not sure if they'd be of much help.
