When should I start checking to see if my overnight train will arrive on time or much later?

Might be a dumb question, but in a few weeks I’m taking the California Zephyr eastward from SLC, which is scheduled to leave at 3:30 AM. I’m ready for the chance for it to leave later than that, but I don’t want to wake up at 3 and stay awake waiting for two hours if I can avoid it. I do know about the tracker on the Amtrak website. What advice do you seasoned Amtrakers have?
