Intermittent silence w/ UM2, especially when low buffer rate

I am trying out Amplitube for the first time, just as a way to practice at home for the time being. The odd thing is that when I turn the buffer size below 512 to reduce latency it just starts going in and out. Even at 512 every 15 seconds or so the signal cuts off for .5 to 1 second before coming back. Any ideas?
