What is the point of my Amex gold

Long story short I have a gold Amex, I fly with work so thought I could stack up some points. Aside from travel you only earn 1 point per pound spent. A flight to New York on average is 90k points. Am I missing something here? How is spending 90k worth it when it saves me 400 quid on a flight. I must be missing something
