My annual fee is coming up next month In October. Last year I was able to get 40k point with $4,000 spend in 3 months. This year seems like it might be a little more difficult.
After reading post on this sub I’ve noticed it’s becoming a little harder to get a good retention offer from Amex. They are offering lower amounts of point or even offering to increase the value of your points to $.01 cent per point so you can pay your annual fee(instead of paying cash). I even saw someone was offered 20k points on 20k spend in 6 months . I’m sure this is the opposite for high spenders
But my brother recently contacted Amex twice for an offer on his card (online chat and over the phone) and they told him they didn’t have any retention offer on his card. Which caught me by surprise given that’s he’s put about $30k on the card this year which I understand that’s not too much but for a card that doesn’t have good point multipliers I’d say it’s a good amount. Also surprising because he barely completed his first year with the card.
Leaves me wondering 3 things
1) Is Amex not giving good offers to try and weed out the credit card churners ,make more money, or get the card to be a little more exclusive like it use to be? If not why ?
2) why would they be doing this right now given they’ll probably have a lot of people leaving the card after recent changes to airport lounge and Authorized users?
3) Will I be able to get a good retention offer ?(will update my post sometime after OCT. 3rd )
Would love to see your thoughts on this. And what other retention offers are y’all getting out there. I might be completely wrong and just how Amex roles. Best of luck if you’re calling about one soon 🫡
$30k/mo would prob do it, not $30k this year.
