I know I am late but I am watching this movie for the first time. For those who don’t know, "Beautiful Boy" is a 2018 film directed by Felix van Groeningen. It's based on the memoirs of David Sheff and his son Nic Sheff, focusing on Nic's struggles with addiction. Steve Carell plays David Sheff, and Timothée Chalamet portrays Nic Sheff, delivering powerful performances that explore the impact of addiction on a family.
I felt that Karen (Maura Tierney) who is Nic’s step mother and David’s wife should be talked about more. I love how natural her character was who didn’t over do or under do her part as Nic’s step mom to help him in his addiction journey. She never had that attitude that “what did I get myself into” and always tried to care for Nic while also not being overly affectionate, which could have looked pretentious. There’s a scene where Nic shouts at her and she decided not to react about it instead of hating him for it. And she was also realistic and logical enough to make David understand at the end that he did all he could for Nic.
