My mom (F60) has been contemplating getting a well drilled near the small field in the back of my parents' house for a very long time. They do a little bit of farming every year and any non-rain water has been brought in from our nearest neighbours' wells. So, in the last year, she has been getting information about what company will drill and for what price, and she had asked the neighbours around for what their experiences with their recent wells have been like.
My mom sent plenty of links and has been bringing this idea up with my dad (M60) for the past half a year, however, he never voiced any opinion, and as he admitted yesterday, hasn't even looked at any of the information from my mom.
A couple of weeks ago, the company's employees came around to assess possible drill points, and left some markers. They left me (F30) with instructions on what to do next and to pass that information on to my parents.
My dad removed one of these markers, because he didn't know what they were for. When my mom told him it was from the well placement assessment, he lost it.
According to him, he is absolutely against the idea of drilling a well. She has gone behind his back to make this decision, and he doesn't want a well there because we haven't needed a well since they built their house. Also, we get our water from the neighbours, and why would we need more. If we do, we can just use tap water instead.
He never voiced this opinion, but because he didn't voice any opinion at all, my mom decided to at least start the process. This can always be postponed or even completely stopped without any money lost on our part.
I took my mom's side in this argument, because I am well aware that nothing gets done around the property unless she starts it. They will also benefit way more from having their own well, than relying on neighbours every time, or even using drinking water when all amenities are skyrocketing in prices. And the droughts this summer will only make the water consumption worse.
Now AITA for taking her side? Because I sure am being called that by my dad.
Prior instances of similar behaviour from my dad:
We had a hoover that got busted by my grandad, and it lay in storage for over 5 years, collecting dust. This was one of the hoovers that was actually of good quality, so my mom wanted to get a replacement motor and have it fixed. My dad got into a massive argument with her, that it would cost more to repair it than buy a brand new hoover. She ordered a replacement motor for less that 40 euros, and after much grumbling from my dad it is now as good as new. Now my dad gloats about fixing it.
Another is the unfinished bathroom. We have one functional bathroom, but one has been untouched since the house was built. That has now been for over 30 years. My dad is still not doing anything about getting it finished, and it is now another storage room. My mom refuses to start doing anything about this issue to prove a point.
