I, 21yr old female, have always had a close relationship with my parents, mainly my mother. I would discuss anything to her and she did the same with me.
But, once I left for college in 2019 and started dating my now fiance, things changed with the relationship between my mother and I. I did not talk to her (and my father for this matter) as much and in return, she thought I did not want to hang out with her and did not love her anymore. I have explained multiple times how that is not true but to no avail. Every time she brought that up, we would argue and my dad would try and help the situation by talking it out. After 3 or so times of this, I was exhausted by the continuous cycle and really started thinking on just getting some space from them.
The last straw was in July when a similar situation happened and I walked out, called my friend to pick me up, and took only my clothes on my back, my phone, and my wallet. My parents called and messaged me multiple times asking where I am at and I said I needed some space. I was asked why I was doing this to them and to just come back to talk thing's out. My father went as far as to track my phone and show up to my friends house trying to get me home. Sense then, I stopped any contact with them unless I needed something like fafsa information for college. They got that I needed space and I respect them for that.
Fast forward to this past christmas vacation (from Dec. 11th to ~Jan. 10th) I was able to stay with my fiance and his parents. On New Years Eve, I stayed up late waiting for the new year. I realized I had never verbally told my parents I wanted distance and knew I should make things right and told them I need more distance then just the occasional message, I am going to work on myself, and once I am in a better place I will communicate with them again. I got a responce from my dad the next evening stating that I had already desided to distance my self a while back and would not be used. He said he would take me off of insurance and the phone plan Janurary 13th. He also stated that the therapist I have been seeing for a year has not contacted them once and is a red flag to them. This was a red flag as my therapist can not legally tell them they are my therapist.
I was very suprised but kind of understood that they would go that far. I said my goodbye and emediatly tried to get a new insurance and atleast tracfone minutes. I had called my insurance January 13th and 15th for them to say that I was never taken off and my sister this week said I was never taken off. I had been taken off of the phone plan but was put back on last week so my dad could contact me and appologize for everything though he never did anything, it was really just me having the last straw with the plumating relationship between my mom and I.
So, AITA for having distance with my parents and waiting a senester to tell them I need distance?
