AITA for wanting to join the military?

Post Body

To start, I have a HUGE family commitment, I have a handicap sister who is paralyzed and cannot walk. She has the mental capacity of about an 8 year old. So often my time is either spent at work, or at home taking care of her.(including catheters, diaper changes, and other misc care) so I often take care if her a lot. I do have another sister (23) who also knows how to take care of her, but my family and I often feel that she does a bad job, or sits in her room all day. But I feel that if I leave, she will be stuck at home all the time, forced to take care of our sister, and never be able to hang or do what she wants to do...

For the past 2 years or so I've been seriously considering joining for awhile. My best friend recently got accepted into the naval academy, and when i went to see him this month for the weekend, it made me realize how much i hate where I'm at in life, and how much i hate Colorado. Now I know that enlisting is going to be VASTLY different than the naval academy, and i am talking/going to meet with a recruiter next week. So it's not a spur of the moment decision. I want to join yo be a better man than I am now, learn discipline and meet amazing people, have the opportunity to have a real career. I feel that of I don't enlist, I'll be stuck doing a meaningless retail job the rest of my life...

All my friends keep telling me to just do it. And start living my own life, but I feel so guilty and selfish for wanting to do this...

AITA? Does it seem like I'm abandoning my family? And Does it seem like I'm screwing my sister over?
