AITA for not calling my mom on my way home from work?
Growing up, my mom and I never had a great relationship. Arguments, “you need to start paying bills or move out!”, etc. However, when my now-wife and I started dating in 2012, my mother suddenly became interested in my life again, to the point of being obsessive.
I get texts and phone calls multiple times a day. She will call me, leave a voicemail saying she called me, send a Facebook message saying she left a voicemail, and a text message telling me to check my Facebook. I always respond when I am not busy, but when I say it is CONSTANT throughout the day, every time I look at my phone a have some form of notification from her.
Her latest kick is, because I work night shift, texting me all night, and 15 minutes before I get off, sending me the “I’m awake if you want to call” text. Here is why that is a problem...
I am a 911 Dispatcher. My job consists of 12 hours of listening to people that are either having the worst day of their lives, or complaining about the most petty things you can imagine. Sometimes they are funny (a call from an older woman trying not to laugh while telling me about her 60 year old husband falling off of her in bed and hurting his hip comes to mind), but more often it is a stressful job. You can imagine the kinds of calls we get. Even on the more mundane calls, it’s people yelling and screaming for us to “JUST DO YOUR JOB AND SEND ME SOMEBODY!!!”, or calling us racist because we ask if the suspect is black, white, or Hispanic in case he runs- “Why does that matter?!” (Believe me, I wish I was making this stuff up...)
It may not sound like much, but the 7 minutes in my car on my way home from work are sacred to me. I can listen to one of my audiobooks, put a good song on and belt the whole way home, that 7 minutes allows me to unwind and disconnect from work before I get home. I hope you can understand that the absolute last thing I want to do in that 7 minutes is talk to anyone else on the phone.
My mom takes this as a personal attack, though. I’ve explained to her multiple times that I do not want to talk to ANYONE on the phone on my way home from work, not just her, but she thinks because of how she words that “... if you want to call” text that I just don’t want to talk to her.
So Reddit, I ask you: am I the asshole she thinks I am?
