I’m an Asian male living in London. My phone has been mugged off me 3 times over the past 2 years, and I’ve also had near misses at least 5 times in the same period. In most cases it’s guys in balaclavas on bicycles.
My girlfriend who is half-Asian half-White was born and raised in London (in a somewhat dodgy area) and has never been mugged. She made the comment, “There must be a reason you get targeted so often. Maybe you’re an easy target.”
I think she is victim blaming me. I think if you replaced being mugged with any other crime - e.g. being bullied, being sexually harassed, etc; it would not be acceptable language. She insists she would not say that if it was those crimes but in the context of mugging she doesn’t think she said anything that warrants this reaction.
FYI - we wrote this together, so hopefully it’s as unbiased as they come.
