So, my sister is getting married in November and I'm very happy for her. She plans on having it in our home country because the majority of both families live there. However, since I'm an international student in the U.S. I'm constrained in my ability to move. My student visa has expired so if I decide to go back to my home country, I'll have to renew it before I can re-enter the U.S. The problem is that it's difficult to even get a visa appointment in my home country, and even if I do, it's not guaranteed that I get a Visa. Alternatively, I am able to travel to Canada and have it renewed there. She informed me her designated school official said that there is almost zero chance of getting rejected in Canada. However, I'm still not willing to take any risk. Because if anything goes wrong, I won't be able to come back to the U.S. and I forfeit my job, everything I own including my car, etc.Â
To be fair to my sister, she has contributed immensely to my success in life. She supported me for about six months during the period (with the little money she was making) when I didn't have a job and is even responsible for the great job (at a nice tech company) that I have right now. I would say she is 10000% responsible for my success. I still don't want to take the risk.
I told her that I won't be able to come and she got pretty upset with me and I also feel incredibly bad.Â
Reddit, AITA?
Update: I am allowed to have an expired visa an expired visa as long as I maintain my status.
