Has anyone found an affordable yet reliable air purifier (or brand of purifiers) that actually makes a noticeable difference in air quality?

I have tried numerous models and the expensive and known name-brand ones all seem to putter out right after the warranty expires. I’ve afraid to buy some of the lesser known, cheaper Amazon finds because I’ve had terrible luck with those.
Right now I’m specifically looking for one small space purifier (for my office in an old, moldy, mildewy, dusty, building) and one for my 270 sq foot bedroom (my housemate has a dog and I’m terribly allergic)!
