If allergy meds work, are my symptoms because of allergies?

ive never had allergies in my life, but ive a sneaking suspicion that the symptoms im experiencing now (and apparently this time last summer too, but i dont personally remember if thats true) are because of a local allergen
would cold meds not work if theyre not allergies? trying to decide what to get from the drugstore, especially since ive never used allergy meds
