Starting off with an apology for the delayed post, got wound up in work-related stuff and couldn't spare time for reddit in the recent while. Anyways, we're back folks, and for this time, I'm bringing forth another old Institution of Allahabad, which has stood serving us for many many years even before the birth of most members on this Subreddit. Paradise Bakery and Confectionary.
Although everyone in the city knows Paradise for one thing only, and that is their Cakes and Pastries, however, the place does have its age-old recipes which could give any of the established chains a run for their money. One such thing is the Burger. (Veg/Non Veg both are amazing).
Venue:Â Paradise Bakery & Confectionary
Location: Wheeler Book Store Campus, Civil Lines (Next to original Eat On/Kamdhenu) | Balson Chauraha, Next to Balson Medical Store
Best Time to Eat: 11 AM to 3 PM; Post 8:30 PM (The place gets very crowded in the evening)
Recommendation: Veg Burger, Chicken Burger (and related burgers) (INR 120 )
The Deets
For the OG Allahabadis who have lived in this city since their birth, Paradise stood as a guaranteed visit for the Birthday Cake of any friend, or a Cake for any function. Paradise gave you that extra bit of better quality cake compared to your average neighbourhood bakery, and yet not as expensive as El-Chico. Apart from cakes, it was the Sandwiches, Pastries, Patties/Puffs, or your everyday Bread/Buns which made you visit this place. The joint holds a special place in our childhood, where we used to long wait for the day parents will take us to Paradise and we could finally get to eat what we like.
The Civil Lines branch originally used to be a narrow gallery like store with no place to sit, and yet used to be as crowded as ever. The Balson Branch used to be known for a larger space, but the USP of the place used to be an Arcade Game Zone, due to which all of us used to be attracted to go there as kids. The Civil Lines branch has now expanded after the Fire Accident earlier last year, but the place now looks as amazing as ever.
Coming to their Burgers, while McDonald's opened pretty early in the city, not everyone could afford the same. The only other place which served good quality continental food used to be HotStuff (will cover in another post), but then again, HotStuff wasn't very much affordable for everyone. Hence came Paradise to the rescue. During the early days, Paradise used to sell their standard burgers at INR 60/pc. (with fries), and a cheaper version of the same burger at INR 25. This burger was a hit between students and parents alike.
While HotStuff did amazing with their burgers, their buns lacked quality at time, and ended up being greasy. Paradise ended up not making the same mistake, and delivering the perfect buns, not greasy, but not dry at the same time. The USP in their burgers is their coleslaw/creamy sauce, which just gives you a punch of taste in every bite. Though you have to be careful while eating, the fat juicy burgers will get messy in no time if you don't hold them properly.
You can always pair the burgers up with their Cold Coffee (could cover in another post), or a Cold Drink (yes, Allahabad me cold drink hi bolte hai xD).
The Shortcomings
- The peeps at Paradise have lately raised their prices dramatically, which might seem a bit on the steeper side for some, but is well worth the price.
- There is limited seating space.
Rating: There has not been a time that I've visited Allahabad and not went to Paradise, and I hope to continue that legacy forever. 9/10 for me always. :')
That's it for this side. Any disagreements or suggestions go straight in the comments folks.
Until next time. :')
