Apart from Dahi Jalebi, Kachori Sabzi has been the go-to breakfast, lunch, and even dinner for the OG Allahabadis. While the city definitely boasts big names like Netram, Chandralok, Kallu etc. for their generational taste and goodwill, lately these places have hiked up their prices to such an ungodly extent, the everyday student perhaps seeks something more conventional?
Well, for post 3, I decided to go for something that all of us in Allahabad can relate to, and that's our favourite, Kachori-Sabzi.
Venue: Mishri Laal Kachori Bhandar
Location: Opposite Laxmi Talkies, Katra. (Next to The Palms Resort, or as we know it, Royal Garden lol)
Best Time to Eat: 10 AM to 4 PM
Recommendation: Kachori Thaali
The Deets
Mishri bhaiya has been running this stall since before most of us were even born. I remember back when we were kids, the stall used to be set up at the Laxmi Talkies Chauraha in front of the shoe-shop, next to Kesarwani Chat Stall. After the redevelopment of the area and widening of the roads, Mishri bhaiya shifted his stall to the present location.
He has been manning this stall with his dad for more than 40 years now. He still keeps the price to a mere 30 rupees a plate, and let me tell you, the taste is still AS GOOD! For 30 bucks, he gives you 6 mini kachoris, a gravy-wali sabzi (Aloo-Soyabean, Aloo Rajma, etc.), a relatively dry sabzi (Dum Aloo [Allahabad wala grey wala], Kaddoo, Baingan] which usually is Dum Aloo, and raita. The man likes to serve piping hot kachodis, so you'll always see him frying them in front of your own eyes.
To top it all off, Mishri Bhaiya always welcomes us with this Big-Ass smile on his face, and engages you in fun conversation about God knows what. He is the perfect example of usual Allahabadi Banter, be it stories of how his vegetable vendor is ripping him off, or how the kirana is such an idiot for overcharging him, or how the elections are getting on over his head (most recent conversation lol). The 10-15 minutes you spend at the stall, you'll have a fun time.
The Shortcomings
- The place isn't exactly the most comfortable to be, it is the usual streetside vendor. Might be an issue for ladies (no generalising, just a statement)
- It gets pretty warm during the day, because its just a stall and a tarp.
- Drinking water is a problem, he still follows the old way of bringing a big ol' drum of water, so its best recommended that you carry your own.
Rating: Mishri bhaiya will always have my heart, and no trip to Allahabad is complete without a visit to his stall once. Solid 8.5/10.
That's it for this side. Any disagreements or suggestions go straight in the comments folks.
Until next time. :')
